China Surges Ahead with Record Renewable Energy Installations in 2025
China set new global records by adding 198 GW of solar and 46 GW of wind capacity in the first five months of 2025, pushing its total solar capacity above 1,080 GW. May alone saw 93 GW of solar and 26 GW of wind installed, underscoring China’s dominance and accelerating the global clean energy transition.[5]
EU Renewable Electricity Share Drops Despite Solar Boom in Early 2025
The share of electricity from renewables in the EU fell by 4.3 percentage points to 42.5% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year, as strong solar growth failed to offset declines in wind and hydro generation. Denmark, Portugal, and Croatia maintained the highest renewable shares, while 19 EU countries saw year-on-year decreases due to lower wind and hydro output.[2]
Global Energy Access Improves, But International Support Needed for Equity
According to the latest SDG 7 report, nearly 92% of the world’s population now has basic access to electricity, marking significant progress in energy access. However, the report emphasizes that continued international financial support is crucial to address persistent disparities and accelerate further progress.[1]
US Clean Energy Projects Face Uncertainty Amid Policy Shifts
In the United States, policy uncertainty and proposed tax credit rollbacks led to the cancellation or delay of $15.5 billion worth of clean energy investments in 2025, affecting projects in solar, battery storage, and electric vehicle manufacturing. The stalled projects would have created approximately 12,000 jobs, highlighting the impact of political shifts on green infrastructure growth.[5]
Renewables Set to Overtake Coal Globally in 2025
Renewables-based electricity generation is projected to surpass coal-fired generation worldwide in 2025, marking a major milestone in the energy transition. This shift, driven by rapid capacity additions in solar and wind, is supported by pro-renewable policies in major economies such as China and the European Union.[6]
