Private Sector Mini-Grid Developers Sign Funding Agreements to Fast Track Zambia’s Electrification Efforts

Sustainable Energy for All, supported by The Rockefeller Foundation, awarded over US$1.1 million to OnePower Zambia, Renwasol/Solar23, and Engie Energy Access Zambia to develop 43 mini-grids under the Zambia Energy Demand Stimulation Incentive (ZEDSI) programme. This initiative aims to provide clean, reliable energy to more than 7,000 people, advancing Zambia’s goal of electrifying 1,000 communities by 2030[1].

Clean Energy Transition Accelerates Globally with Renewed Momentum

The World Economic Forum reports a significant rebound in the energy transition in 2025, with 65% of countries improving their Energy Transition Index scores and 28% advancing in security, sustainability, and equity dimensions. Despite record clean-energy investments of $2 trillion in 2024, challenges remain in energy security and emissions, emphasizing the need for resilient grids and digital infrastructure, particularly in emerging economies[2].

EU Renewable Electricity Share Declines in Early 2025 Despite Solar Gains

In Q1 2025, renewable energy accounted for 42.5% of the EU’s net electricity generation, down 4.3 percentage points from the previous year due to decreases in hydro and wind generation, although solar power increased notably. Denmark, Portugal, and Croatia led with the highest shares of renewables, while Czechia, Malta, and Slovakia reported the lowest[3].

Renewables Set to Surpass Coal Power Generation Globally in 2025

According to the International Energy Agency, renewable electricity generation is projected to overtake coal-fired generation in 2025, with wind and solar power expected to surpass nuclear by 2026. Key drivers include policy support and cost reductions, especially in China and the European Union, which are accelerating deployment of solar PV and wind capacity as part of their clean energy transition strategies[5].

US Renewable Energy Deployment Booms Amid Policy Support and Manufacturing Reshoring

The US is experiencing rapid growth in renewable energy, with utility-scale solar capacity rising 36% in 2023 and projected deployment of 42 GW in 2024. The Inflation Reduction Act and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act have spurred $91 billion in clean energy manufacturing investments, enhancing supply chain resilience and accelerating domestic solar, wind, storage, and hydrogen projects[8].
